05-05-10 Buying stock in animal industry and the AR perspective to abortion

On this week show I discuss how PETA has (once again) brought stock in animal industry to try convince them to increase welfare standards. Later I discuss the AR perspective on abortion. A lot of people try to accuse vegans of being hypocrites because they are pro life or pro choice. They argue that if vegans are against killing animals they should be against killing fetuses (or if vegans are for animal rights they should also be for a womens right to her reproductive system). The animal rights argument is based on sentience, if an animal is sentient then they have rights. It is not clear whether or not fetuses are sentient right holders. And even if they are, then we are presented with an interesting rights conflict, one right holder living inside another.Ā  This is a difficult conflict to negotiate, whereas there is no complex rights conflict with veganism.

Lastly I talk about how Antagonist AD is looking for a new vegan guitarist and I mention Gary Francione’s new podcast, a discussion with Ronnie Lee and Roger Yates.

I also read out this recipe for vegan “mince”:

  • 1 Ā½ cup water
  • 1 cup TVP
  • 1 tsp sugar
  • 2 TBSP soy sauce
  • 2 TBSP oil

  • Soak the TVP in hot water until it becomes soft
  • Drain the water out and squeeze as dry as possible.
  • Heat oil in frying pan then put in TVP and fry until it turns brown
  • Remove TVP from frying pan
  • Put oil and soy sauce in frying pan, then put the TVP back in
  • Add in some water and leave it in a slow cooker.

  1. Hey Sam,
First of all- kudos! You are doing really well, you totally blow away everyones expectations/stereotypes of a 14year old boy, I struggle to get taken serious and I am 20! You seem like you are really going places and I love that you are taking stand for animal rights šŸ™‚
You are a smart, thoughtful young dude, whom I have recently discovered through Veganacious, a blog I follow, I have a question; What is your opinion on PeTA’s exploitation of Women?
    Vegans FTW šŸ˜‰

    • Thank you for the kind words Kel šŸ™‚

I am certainly opposed to any exploitation of women and any form of discrimination, whether that’s based on gender, species, race, or whatever. As well as the many moral problems with PETA exploiting women there are also several practical problems (portraying women as nothing more then meat won’t stop people thinking of animals as meat).
