03-03-10 “Animals don’t have rights because they don’t have responsibilties”

On this weeks show I answer a common objection to veganism, “but animals don’t have responsibilities, therefore they don’t have rights”. While this may be valid for some rights (you have to be responsible to have a right to drive), there are basic rights that all sentient beings have, regardless of whether or not they have responsibilities. Infants don’t have responsibilities, yet they still have the right not to be killed, enslaved, tortured etc.

I also discuss an opinion piece called Shades of Green: Vegan Arrogance and read out this recipe for vegan peanut butter fudge:

  • ¾ cup Olivani or other vegan margarine
  • 2 and ¼ cup icing sugar
  • 1 cup peanut butter

Melt the margarine in a saucepan. Take off the heat and stir in the peanut butter. Keep stirring until the peanut butter is melted in with the margarine. Mix in the icing sugar a little bit at a time. Grease a 9×9 glass container and chill in a refrigerator for an hour or two.
